The Cross Hidden in the Hebrew Alphabet

The Hebrew alphabet opens with a letter that means God and closes with a letter that was once drawn as a cross. Between those two bookends, the whole gospel is spelled out.

There are 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet. The first is א Aleph; the last is ת Tav. In Paleo-Hebrew — the ancient picture-script — those two letters are not random shapes. Aleph was the head of an ox, standing for strength, a leader, God. Tav was a cross: a simple "+" or "✕" that meant a mark, a sign, the seal of a covenant.

The bookends: God, and a cross

Read that as a sentence and it is startling. The alphabet the Scriptures are written in begins with God and ends with a cross. When Jesus says in Revelation, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last," a Hebrew ear hears "I am the Aleph and the Tav" — I am God, and I am the cross.

The gospel letters

Four letters in particular carry the story:

Put the pictures in a line and a sentence appears: God … the house … the nail … the cross. The strength of God, the household of God, secured by a nail, sealed with a cross. That is not a translation trick; it is what the pictures meant.

Even the name of God

The name YHWH (יהוה) — Yod, Hey, Vav, Hey — reads in pictures as hand, behold, nail, behold: "behold the hand, behold the nail." The nail sits in the middle of God's own name.

The cross was not a late idea. It was the last letter of the alphabet all along.

This is the thread the book follows from beginning to end — that the Highest One would let one house fall so an eternal one could be built, and that He signed the whole story, from Aleph to Tav, before the first page was written.
