What Does “Jehovah-Jireh” Mean?

It is the name a father spoke on the hardest mountain of his life — the moment God provided what the father could not. And it points straight to the Cross.

Jehovah-Jireh (more accurately YHWH-Yireh, יְהוָה יִרְאֶה) means “the LORD will provide” — or, more literally, “the LORD will see to it.” The Hebrew verb ra'ah means “to see,” and in Hebrew, for God to see a need is for God to provide for it. His seeing is His providing.

The mountain where the name was born

The name comes from Genesis 22. God tells Abraham to take his son — “your only son (yachid), whom you love” — and offer him on a mountain in Moriah. Abraham obeys, step by agonizing step. When Isaac asks where the lamb is, Abraham answers by faith: “God will provide for himself the lamb” (Genesis 22:8). At the last moment, God stops his hand and provides a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham names the place YHWH-Yireh — “the LORD will provide” (Genesis 22:14).

A substitute in the son’s place

The heart of the story is substitution: the ram dies instead of Isaac. The son is spared because a substitute is provided. Abraham walks down the mountain with the son he was ready to lose — because God saw, and God provided.

The mountain, revisited

Here is what makes the name tremble. Moriah, the mountain range where this happened, is traditionally linked to Jerusalem — the very region where, centuries later, another Father would lead another Son up a hill. This time there would be no ram, no last-moment stay. This time the beloved yachid — the only Son — would be the provision. What God asked of Abraham but spared him, God did not spare Himself (Romans 8:32).

“God will provide the lamb,” Abraham said — and on that same range of hills, one day, He did.
